No matter how much our flesh tends to fight against it, the truth of the matter is; our opinions don't always need to be spoken, as well as, our thoughts or whims don't always need to be expressed by way of actions.
Self control is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. That means as we surrender ourselves more and more to the leading of the Holy Spirit we do not allow our thoughts and emotions to control what we say and do but rather we, using wisdom, weigh out the repercussions (or type of fruit that will be produced by what we say and/or do) of what our words and actions might bring about before we speak or act upon them.
It's not always easy to withhold something we are bubbling over inside to speak out or something we think in the moment would be fun or entertaining to do but in the long run and even at times in the 'right after' moment, we see the benefits of holding our tongue or action for the sake of more productive and better quality fruit.

James 1:19 "So then my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath."
